SA Crew Overdue in Thailand

We are seeing reports in the media of A South African catamaran crew on a delivery to Thailand have not been heard from in a month and a half.

ss44 catThe new Sunsail RC044 catamaran departed  Cape Town on the 14th December for a delivery trip to the charter base in Phucket, Thailand with an estimated arrival date of the  2nd February. On February 12th, the family of Captain Anthony Murray reported his catamaran as overdue to the Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (MRCC) in Cape Town. The yacht’s Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) had not been activated.

Skipper Murray was contracted to Tui Marine, a US based company with sailing operations worldwide. He has over 25 years experience at sea, including multiple catamaran deliveries. He is well known within the yacht delivery industry. A capable and experienced yacht captain.

Our thoughts are with the crew and their families at this time.

Yacht Delivery Captains Use Diapers

Diapers or nappies as we call them in the UK have been used many times over the years by our top delivery captains.

baby nappiesYacht Delivery Captains Use Diapers. As part of our commitment to deliver yachts in the best condition, clean and presentable our delivery captains go to extraordinary lengths to achieve this. No part of the boat is ignored.

Our captains have learnt to deal with many problems during a delivery and have experienced oil and hydraulic leaks. They never occur at a convenient time and usually in a heavy sea. Inevitably some of the oil can make its way into the bilges, a notoriously difficult place to clean and pumping the oil out is not an option.  This is where diapers (or nappies) come to the rescue.

Modern disposable nappies contain a highly absorbent material called polyacrylate. This is trapped inside the nappy layers and can absorb many times its own weight in liquid. When the polyacrylate gets wet it turns into a gel, holding in the oil in the process.

Cleaning the bilges becomes much more manageable.

Yacht Deliveries at a Time of Financial Uncertainty

At a time of financial uncertainty, why has there been such an increase in yacht deliveries?

DSCF0031.JPGThe demand for our services has not been at such a high level for many months and a substantial increase from the same time last year. There are several reasons why this is the case and why now has never been a better time to consider moving your yacht.

We have seen a dramatic change in the market and the motivation why many yacht owners are contracting with Reliance. While new yacht sales are down, brokerage is very bouyant.  Money is always a good motivator and especially nowadays in this econimic downturn. Several factors are influencing our clients and the benefits received from moving their yacht. As always boat sales are a major influence in the delivery market.

The present low value of Sterling against the US Dollar and the Euro in particular means that brokerage yachts in the UK have become very attractive to overseas clients. Combine this with the worldwide fall in boat prices means that buyers are getting some excellent deals and particularly in the UK. All these yachts need to be delivered home to their new owners safely and good condition.

We are also seeing an increase in vendors that are keen to move their yachts to where they will be seen and attract more attention. A yacht available for viewing in Palma is likely to be viewed by more prospective buyers than the same yacht in Panama or Dubai. An owner that is keen to sell should take a good look at where to place their yacht. We know that some brokers are concerned that they do not have sufficient boats listed to meet their inquiries.

We are seeing plenty of activity in the market albeit with reduced prices and margins. Clients are more accutely aware than ever before of getting the best service for their money and Reliance is responding to this demand. It’s by listening to our clients needs and looking at the small details that makes our service great.
